Mistakes are valuable.

Mistakes are valuable for two reasons, but only one moves a team forward. Some teams see mistakes as valuable because of the learning that comes from the risk that was taken. Those teams get to count the mistake as part of the path forward. No hard feelings. Blame isn’t necessary because it’s part of the learning process. The other reason mistakes can be valuable is that less effective teams can use them as proof against someone else’s reputation. A mistake can be leveraged into a narrative that places me as more competent than someone and therefore more necessary. This type of value never moves a team forward and miscategorizes mistakes in a way that distracts from the team effort.
