Changing the Flavor

Adding a new person to a team will inevitably change the identity of the team. That change can seem threatening, but it is a reality. New people do in fact threaten the status quo because it’s impossible to cause zero impact in an environment you enter. Expecting to preserve the identity of a team too closely is a lot like having the expectation that you can add ingredients to soup without changing the flavor. This is not a reasonable expectation. Great teams see the new person as more than a change to the identity of the team, but rather a vital addition to it.
