A diverse team cannot stay diverse if there is an expectation that teammates give up their individual identity to choose to belong to the team identity. Embracing diversity requires an openness to uncertainty and misunderstanding. It’s easier to only allow those willing to become like “us” to join the team, but surrounding ourselves with those that are narrowly defined as “us” is limiting. By cloning teammates, we copy the liabilities of the team identity with little hope for future change.
