Creative freedom is not a free-for-all.

When I empower someone, I should trust that they will handle the details in a way that would delight both of us. Just because I share some authority, doesn’t mean that I have abdicated my responsibility for the task or project. Creative freedom doesn’t mean that the person I empowered has complete freedom. Empowerment requires trust but it also requires clearly communicated boundaries that others are trusted to operate in. Empowered people must clearly understand what their leader expects so that they can be free to deliver that.
