Extra Planning

When helping people properly manage a project, I am often surprised at how surprised they are at how far out the planning should be. In our last minute culture, people think being two weeks ahead is overachieving. Sometimes that may be the case, but the appropriate amount of time allotted for most project planning is determined by the experience and competence of the team. Novel experiences obviously require more time. Some activities require turn around time that cannot be adjusted, no matter the urgency. Teams must resist the urge to plan at the latest possible moment.
