When we are all or nothing, we miss out on so many joys in life. The discipline of moderation is the key to living life on the edge. Unfortunately, our self control prohibits us from indulging in much of what life has to offer because we have a fear of overdoing it. One cookie isn’t terrible. I should be able to enjoy it without much fear of spoiling my effort in the gym this week. The slippery slope doesn’t have to be a reality. It’s just easier to avoid temptation through an insistence on abstaining completely. Self-control isn’t living life cookie-free; self-control is the ability to enjoy one cookie without fear of sliding into finishing off the box.
