When we don’t see teammates as real people, we are more likely to leave them behind in our wake of progress. It’s easy to write someone off as not on board when we don’t really know them enough to care about alternate possibilities. Perhaps someone in their life has a serious health problem and it’s a huge victory for them to show up to work. Perhaps they aren’t really negative, they just stayed up all night with their sick child. All of us have aspects of our lives that earn us a pass when leadership and teammates know about them. It’s the team’s job to make a way to know. When people choose to belong to the team, they need the team to choose to never leave them behind. Knowing them and understanding the circumstances that make them who they are is a good step in that direction.
