People can change. Not everyone is suited for every position. If both of these statements are true, then there are times when development is not the answer. What happens if you walk with someone for a year and they are still not on a path to thriving? Is there a position on the team where they can thrive? It’s probably a coin flip. If there isn’t, it is worth a tough conversation to transition that person to a new position even if that means they leave the team. Once time has been taken in an attempted development and a lack of potential progress becomes evident, it is crucial to move quickly because development takes time and the team deserves to have the new person begin as soon as possible.
