Controlling leaders create an elitist culture on their teams. They distrust those that haven’t completely proven themselves. That distrust begins subtly but becomes less so when even the smallest decisions are required to have oversight. People know when they are not trusted and begin to wonder why they are on the team when they are not really being asked to contribute anything outside of what they are told. Eventually controlled teammates will ask, “Am I really needed?”. Great teams never have to ask that question. Great leaders never put their teammates in the position to ask it.
