Every organization has a history and that history can create what some call a sacred cow. It’s a practice, system, method or object that has been deemed untouchable due to its nostalgic value. Change agents tend to get mean looks or their hands slapped when they even glance at the sacred cow. Defenders of the status quo love to remind people how important the sacred cow is every time its necessity is questioned. Some sacred cows are harmless heirlooms that hang around for many years past their usefulness. Others are clunky remnants of the “good ole days” and can limit progress. Great teams know when and how to honor the past without allowing sentiment to compromise the present and future of the team.
