When we give someone responsibility without giving them authority, we have done so in name only. If someone is expected to be responsible and ultimately answerable for a task or goal, they will need to be the decision maker in how to accomplish that task or goal. To rob a teammate of decision making authority by micromanaging them and then later attempt to hold them accountable for the failure is very hypocritical. In the end, they were only doing what they were told. It doesn’t feel good to have to own something that was ultimately caused by the decision of another. A good rule of thumb is to never give responsibility to a teammate without also giving them the authority necessary.
