Efficiency vs Expediency

Every team wants to be as efficient as possible. Efficiency makes sure that everyone is eliminating wasteful steps and practices. There is a line where efficiency becomes expediency. People are more valuable than a team’s systems. When an efficient system comes at the cost of people, it has crossed the line of expediency. This doesn’t mean that efficiency should never cause a team discomfort. It just means that discomfort should be acknowledged and accounted for. When efficient teams do without, they do so with an understanding of the benefit. Expedient teams demand efficiency no matter what the cost.
