Fair and Just

There is a lot of talk about equal rights. There has been for the entire history of our democracy. I have noticed that many people assume that equal is just. Justice is simply the correct response to a situation. It can be a positive or negative consequence. I find it interesting that in our culture people demand equal rewards but not equal accountability. This is because equal is not always the right result. Everyone is separated by their choices and thus equal treatment is not as fair as many people make it out to be. A team that doesn’t work as hard or as smart as the champion in their sport shouldn’t expect the same trophy. Sports teams tend to understand this far better than our culture off of the field.
