Teams require a leader with a vision for the future of the team. The purpose and effort of the team should be leveraged toward this vision of the future. The vision is simply seeing a clear path towards a better future. The ability to see is why we use the word “vision.” It describes the leader’s ability to see the path that connects the current reality to the preferred reality that will happen when the team is successful. Sentiment limits vision because it taints the current reality with emotional preferences. These emotional preferences can lead to disappointment and hopelessness when the reality of the world doesn’t align with their sentiment. When we allow sentiment to cloud our vision, we replace the path forward with mere wishes that things should be different.
