Discipline requires security because we can be shamed into poor behavior. Daily habits and the ability to say no to good things requires a lot of will power. It doesn’t help when those that are closest to us pull us away from our discipline in an effort to normalize the less disciplined lifestyle. The visible gap between a disciplined teammate and a less disciplined teammate can cause a contrast that usually results in a shaming. The shaming of the disciplined is a critical point on the team. Ordinary teams allow the undisciplined to decide where the bar is set. They value a “laid back” culture. Great teams never allow an undisciplined lifestyle to influence the expectations of the team. They don’t mind being weird and whispered about as they pull away from the crowd.
