Excellence is a subjective measure. This means that depending on a person’s perspective, the operational definition will change. A person’s appreciation and appetite are directly correlated to their experience. I used to think sushi was a disgusting idea for a meal. I finally gave in and tried it after a friend did his best to introduce it to me and now I have an appetite for it. I love sushi and look forward to the next time I can afford to have it. As a coach, pushing someone towards excellence can feel like my friend trying to feed sushi to a person for the first time. It takes that first experience to really get the perspective necessary to have an appetite for what it takes to be excellent.
