Whenever a team works at a certain pace, they gain a conditioning for that pace. When the pace increases, the team will need to go through a period of conditioning. The conditioning period isn’t very fun. It is full of moments where the team wonders if they have taken on too much. There is a reason that football teams at all levels call their conditioning period “hell week”. If the team perseveres then they will adjust to the quicker pace over time and accomplish more than they ever though they could.
