Cultivating a culture of communication happens every time information is shared. People learn very quickly what others do and do not want to hear. Most people want to give their teammates what they want. This is why negative feedback is sugar-coated or not given at all. This is also why people will only share certain information with certain people in a certain way. How we handle information shapes how others share that information with us. If I respond defensively to criticism or dismiss the importance of a concern, then people may give up trying to help me. If I do not manage my disappointment well when I receive bad news, then I may condition others to avoid sharing bad news with me. The opposite is also true. When I refuse to over react to criticism and bad news, I become a safe place to share all kinds of information.
