Respecting the Opponent

Great teams respect their opponent. They never leave anything to chance when it comes to defeating them. I am sure everyone can think of a high school rivalry where one team disparages another team. The week of the big game is filled with comments about how terrible the other team is or how much they must cheat if they have a good record. If either of those narratives are taken to heart, the opponent has an advantage because they are underestimated. Disparaging a team is not only bad form, it plants thoughts that may cause a team to become overconfident when they should be taking their opponent more seriously.
