A word that has popped up in leadership circles lately is “optics”. Google defines it (typically in a political context) as the way in which an event or course of action is perceived by the public. Optics is a word that we have used in place of saying that we are worried about what others might think or how we might look. There is wisdom in considering how the team is perceived but optics can also be used to make lazy decisions based on fear or to justify the misleading of others.
