Fair Isn’t Equal

There is a funny misconception that treating everyone equal is the fairest thing we can do. Treating everything equal all the time will delay results and dilute the impact of resources. There is a time and place for equal treatment but there is a great advantage when a team focuses to address an area of need or to accelerate the progress of a project that is falling behind. Saying no to everyone because that seems “fair” values no one. Saying yes to everyone devalues our yes and is sure to disappoint. Knowing when and to whom we should say yes communicates and maintains the value we have for each person on the team.
