Accountability changes a relationship. When received well, it strengthens a team because everyone not only gets better, but those who are held accountable see it as an expression of care. Those who are not comfortable with accountability see it as policing and restriction of freedom. There is usually some deep seeded resentment towards authority or a lack of experience in receiving feedback that causes this aversion. It is probably at least partially due to the great job our school system and culture have done cultivating a generation’s self-esteem by coining the phrase “social promotion”.
