Feeding the Ego

Encouragement feeds the ego. The term ego has a negative connotation as it brings to mind the danger of unhealthy narcissism. The ego is a very real aspect of our mind. In fact, there is a psychological term that describes the finite nature of our ego called ego depletion. Ego depletion describes will power and the ability to make decisions as a finite resource. As we go about our day exerting self-control, our ability to do so is gradually depleted with every decision. By the end of the day, we are more susceptible to compromise. Teammates come in handy by providing the perfect amount of encouragement that feeds our ego enough to keeps us steady when we have had a long day of important decision-making. People that do life alone are much more likely to compromise.
