Empowerment is a state of mind that results from specific working and relational conditions.
1) Emotionally secure leadership
2) Freedom of personality
3) Freedom of method
4) Adequate resourcing
5) Consistent feedback
There are other ingredients to empowerment but I believe these are the big five. Without any of these, a teammate will not feel empowered. Team leaders must understand that simply saying the buzzword does not empower others. It’s the cultivation of the working and relational conditions that do so.
