One common distraction teams will face when implementing a plan is the fun new idea that pops up after the plan begins to be implemented. The best plans are worked on way in advance. After a year or more has gone by, the plan that started out as the new exciting thing which was chosen above all the other ideas in a brainstorming session can fade into the boring thing we have been talking about for so long. Teams are vulnerable to the new exciting distraction when they are bored with the current plan. It’s not that we cannot be opportunistic or fun, but we have to be disciplined to finish strong. Flirting with what’s next before our current project is completed will undermine the effectiveness of the plan that has been invested in for so long.
