The Win/Win Myth

A team dynamic is a fragile thing. The relationships must be cultivated and this takes courageous work. Teams are made of individuals who will likely have competing priorities at times. When competing priorities arise, a team leader must take the advice of my favorite character on my favorite TV show, Once Upon a Time. When faced with an imminent threat, the main characters were stuck with deciding to save one person or the entire town. The “Evil” Queen, Regina, said something brilliant: “You’re looking at this all wrong! You’re looking at this like heroes. You’re more than heroes! Your leaders and that means making the tough choice when someone has to lose, and you have to decide.” Looking for the win/win solution is a great place to start. We all love the feeling of being a hero who made everyone happy. More often, we have to accept the role of a villain and decide who loses.
