Shared Authority

I empower my teammates when I defer to them in their area of authority. This is easier said than done and is especially difficult as a leader. It’s difficult because the leader has authority over the entire team, however, the authority is really a shared authority, isn’t it? Decisions should be deferred to the person who is ultimately responsible for the area being discussed. The person responsible for that area will live with the ramifications of the decisions made. Leaders should only insert their perspectives when the deferred decision will adversely affect the rest of the team.
